Giving Flights. Extending Life

Giving Flights. Extending Life

Our Mission:

The Scott S. Craun Foundation is a non-profit charity created by Scott Craun (1975-2011), a registered nurse in Honolulu, Hawaii. Before Scott passed away from Multiple Myeloma, he took the initial steps to establish a fund that could perpetually aid island-bound cancer patients. Multiple Myeloma is a rare blood cell cancer. Scott's know-how as a health care provider AND a cancer patient lent his mission a laser focus on a specific population. Relatively, there are not many myeloma patients in Hawaii (less than 400). The nearest support groups are in California. This charity will make an important difference in the quality of some of these lives. Like Scott, these patients were told, "You have an 'incurable cancer.' Eventually, you will have to take a break from your work. And the most specialized treatment centers are 2500 miles away."

Scott's wish is to provide Hawaii's myeloma patients (or one family member/care-giver) with round-trip airfare to the Continental US for any oncologist-recommended treatment not available in Hawaii. Stem cell transplant, for example, can be a key to prolonging life--sometimes by years--as it was for Scott. Twice Scott experienced the hardships of this relocation for transplant. Scott had many of us to help him through this burden and he was eternally grateful; many other patients are not nearly as networked. Scott became acutely aware of their immediate need. He left behind documents outlining a non-profit based on incremental goals and longevity as priorities over huge sums of money. Ultimate success means for us to be still providing at least one annual flight on the day Hawaii is capable of all specialized myeloma patient technology. Or, even better: on the day MM is no longer deemed "incurable."

To turn Scott's efforts into reality, we will need your help. One annual donation per person--of any amount--is welcomed, along with your suggestions, fundraising ideas, and maybe a few volunteer hours at our events. All who donate will receive a personal message from our foundation updating you on our balance, expenses, number of donors, upcoming fundraisers, and goals. The specific language in our tax exempt 501(c)3 will be transparent to all. We report to every single donor as if they were an investor, beacause they are. The way we give to patients will be on a very personal basis, and we'll share those stories here. Thank you, stay tuned, and thanks to Scott for pointing us in the right direction! We're going to take what he started . . . and keep it going for as long as there is a demand.

Kickball Tournament & BBQ Fundraiser, Sunday 10/18/15, Honolulu

In Honolulu on Sunday, 10/18/15?  Let's play Kickball !

Please join around 150 supporters of the Scott S. Craun Foundation ...as we play KICKBALL in our annual fundraising event.  This a super fun day not only for players but for spectators who want to join us to eat, drink, heckle, and cheer on friends. It's a public park venue, and anyone who wants to join in can pre-register here on this blog page to support Hawaii's myeloma patients. The cost is $25 per person.  In 2014, we netted approximately $2750 in one day of fun.

Who are these people?:  You!  players and non-player spectators (those who simply enjoy a good BBQ) are encouraged to register now and join in on the fun. Years ago, the tradition started among local hospital staff--many who knew our founder, Scott (a Registered Nurse at Straub ER).  But every year there are 50+ new faces in attendance who join-- or create --a team on gameday. Friends of friends, new acquaintances, etc.

What do I get for $25?:  An event T shirt in your team color, lots of food and drink, and the option of playing on a team and kicking butt and some large red balls. Two games guaranteed in a double elimination tournament of around 8 to 12 teams. As a spectator only, come eat, drink, and be merry--and join in on the raffles and prizes.

When?: Sunday October 18, 2015.  Rain or shine.  8:00am to 4:00pm (with Championship game scheduled for 3:15pm).  8:30am first round play starts with kickoff. Feel free to stop by for an hour or two at any point in the day and jump in with the play and festivities.

Where?:  Kilauea District Park.  Corner of Kilauea Ave and 22nd Ave, Honolulu HI 96816  (just downhill of Kapiolani Community College campus)

How do I find a team to play on?:  Bring your own, or join one. Seven players makes a team (three must be female). No maximum number on a team, so think talent, or think big! If registering solo, Email:     kickball@hihealthcarehawaii.com ; or call 808-772-0408; or even better, just register now and show up game day and join others who came solo as we create a team. We have 4 fields and 8 teams playing any given time, all day.  If you spectators change your mind and want to play, you can.

What do I bring?: food for your grill, coolers and cups for ANY KIND of favorite beverage, sneakers, sunscreen, hat, chairs, frisbee, music--and some (optional) extra cash in your pocket for raffles, food, and goodies for sale.  (Please leave four-legged canine friends at home.)

How serious are these games?:  Not very. We take our foundation seriously, not kickball.  We do have referees, but they may be in costume. There will be some great costumes and wigs on the field, and we highly encourage you to pack one along to break out at any time. There will be red solo cups on the field. Athleticism is ... sparse, at best. If you are a talent scout for world cup soccer stars or NFL punters, stay at home. That having been said, every captain will be issued a WAKA rule book, we will have referees, and Final Four play tends to get very competitive for those hungry to take home the travelling trophy. So if you happen to be a baller, feel free to come to win.

Sign me up!  How do I register?: Right here on this page: www.scottcraun.blogspot.com   All you need is a credit card. See that yellow Donate button on the right?  Click it! This takes you to PayPal but you don't have to login to an account to pay with a credit card. First, at the top of the page enter the amount ($25.00/person registering). Second, click on the blue writing, the link reads "Add special instructions to seller."  Here, write in all registrants names (and T-shirt size). Last, click on "Donate Now" at bottom. Early registration runs thru 11:59pm on 10/15/15, after that it's $35.00/player.

If the web fails you, give cash to your captain ...or just show up game day (but Tshirt sizes not guaranteed with late registration).

Questions?:  Call 808-772-0408 and leave a message at any hour.

Thank you for supporting Hawaii's myeloma cancer patients. And thanks for joining our BBQ. See you SUNDAY GAME DAY!
